Hi, my name is Jessie Stanley. My husband and I, along with other leaders, have been leading a group from Georgia 1-2 times per year since 2016. When I went on my first trip, I had no idea what to expect. It’s so hard to remember the feelings of insecurity and unknown that I know I felt back then, but I know those feelings were there. I didn’t know much about missions work at the time, but I knew It was important to me to find a long term partnership and to know that both the financial and temporal investments were stewarded well. Lighthouse Projects exceeded my every expectation and has taught me how to serve in a dignifying and sustainable way. Every project that the ministry takes on in the community is driven by the vocalized needs of the community, not by the outsiders serving. Lighthouse is intentional about partnering with leaders of the communities to make sure that their work and presence is accepted and supported.
Every project is accomplished by both locals and volunteers working side by side. In this way, Lighthouse fosters a partnership so that their work helps without hurting. It does not strip away the dignity of the helped and it does not puff up the helper. Both parties learn and better themselves by broadening their perspectives and learning from each other.
Lastly, as Christian always says “we are demonstrating the gospel in order to earn the right to share it.” If you choose to partner in serving with Lighthouse, I promise you will leave the Dominican Republic changed for the better. In serving alongside Lighthouse projects I have found joy, peace, and Dominican family that keeps me coming back year after year
